Port-Royal Abbaye Destruction

From the late 1600's to early 1700's, the Abbaye of Port-Royal in Paris which had been around for five centuries evolved into a symbol of the Catholic Reform.

They embraced the teachings of a Dutch rector named Jansen, who challenged the interpretation of the Catholic doctrine. It became a real issue as some members of Port-Royal started sheding light onto the driftings of the Catholic Church...

Pope Clement XI was not happy about that and condemned the Port-Royal Jansenist movement. His hand may have also been guided by Louis XIV as the Abbaye was also in political opposition to the absolute power of the Sun King... In 1711, Louis ordered the destruction of the Abbaye of Port-Royal. Absolute power!
