Pont au Double Bridge

The Pont au Double is one of the bridges connecting the left bank to the Ile de la CIté where Notre-Dame is. This tiny single arch bridge is actually right next to the Cathedral.

It is an unusual bridge for Paris in the sense that it is made of wrought iron and covered with copper! I think it is the only one that is designed that way.

It bears the name of the original bridge from the middle ages where one had to pay "double denier", meaning twice the amount you had to pay to cross most other bridges, hence the name...

We no longer have to pay to cross bridges, but then again, we French pay so many other taxes... Oh well...
