Notre-Dame d’Auteuil - Eglise d’Auteuil

This is “Notre-Dame d’Auteuil” aka “Eglise d’Auteuil” in the sixteen arrondissement.

The original church is long gone, it was built in the eleventh century! It went through many transformations and finally made way for a newer larger church after the village of Auteuil was annexed to Paris in 1860.

So the current church was built in the second half of the 1800’s and the major element that makes it different from most churches in Paris is the 50 meter high belfry tower in the style of Byzantine architecture, the same influence as with Sacré-Coeur of Montmartre.

I like the sobriety of the inside contrasting with the beautiful gold cupola painting of Christ. Worth a look if you are visiting the 16th area. One good excuse to visit that neighbourhood is my Art Nouveau Architecture tour! Just an idea…
