Napoleon - Treaty of Campo Formio

On 18 Oct. 1797, the treaty of Campo Formio sealed the end of war between France and Austria. That conflict had started over five years earlier, in April 1792 due to tensions caused by the eruption of the French Revolution whose ideas of Liberty and Equality scared European monarchs!

Austria had gathered a coalition of European countries involving Prussia, England and Spain and fighting had already been going on for four years until the arrival on the scene of a 26 year young general: Napoleone Buonaparte!

Northern Italy at that moment was under Austrian domination, therefore, Napoleon's first campaign is referred to as the Italian campaign. After a streak of twelve consecutive victories, General Bonaparte did not wait for the French Revolutionary diplomats and negotiated the Treaty of Campo Formio himself!
