King’s Cake French Tradition

It’s that time of year again in France: the Epiphany, the religious celebration when we eat the King’s Cake. This is a French tradition occurring on the second Sunday after Christmas, when the three Kings came to see the newborn Jesus.

The first pic shows the south of France version with glazed fruits. The cake itself as the texture of a brioche. The other pic shows the Paris version filled with almost paste inside. Many bakeries come up with a twist with different flavouring or adding toppings on top such as chocolate chips…

All versions come with a "fève" hidden inside. Typically either a dried fava bean or a porcelain figurine (watch out when you bite!) and whoever finds the treasure becomes King or Queen for a day and has to buy the next cake! That’s why you can find this cake throughout all of January… Have you ever tried the Galette des Rois? Which one is your favorite?
